How to Buy a Stairlift Tax-Free in Pennsylvania

Did you know you can buy a stairlift in Pennsylvania without paying sales tax? As long as you have a doctor’s certification, the state does not require you to pay sales tax on stairlifts (also called stair gliders).

However, some companies in Pennsylvania might sell stairlifts without charging sales tax—even if you don’t have a doctor’s note. But state law requires a physician’s certification for the exemption, and we believe in following the rules to keep things fair and legal.

What You Need to Qualify for Tax-Free Stairlifts

To get a stairlift without paying sales tax in PA, you need:

A doctor’s note confirming that you have a physical disability that makes it hard or impossible to use stairs. We provide a doctor's certification form for you to fill out with your physician. You can download it here: Stairlift Certification
The stairlift installed in your home (not a commercial building).

That’s it! As long as you meet these two conditions, Pennsylvania law says you don’t have to pay sales tax on your stairlift.

Where Does This Rule Come From?

This exemption comes from Senate Bill No. 1210 (1997) and Pennsylvania’s Tax Reform Code (Section 204(56)). These laws list stairlifts as tax-free when a doctor certifies that you need one due to a disability.
