What Is A Vertical Platform Lift?

By Darrell Foster of Keystone Accessibility

A Vertical Platform Lift (VPL)

sometimes called a porch lift, is like a small elevator that helps people using wheelchairs, scooters, or other mobility devices travel vertically between levels. They’re a great solution for people who need to move between the ground level and a porch, deck, or higher floor without the need for a long and bulky ramp. VPLs can be installed both indoors and outdoors and offer a safe, space-efficient way to improve accessibility at home.

What Is a Vertical Platform Lift?

A Vertical Platform Lift consists of a platform attached to a tower that moves the platform up and down to different levels. You simply roll onto the platform, press and hold a button, and the lift carries you up or down, depending on where you need to go. These lifts are perfect for people using wheelchairs or scooters, offering an easy and reliable way to move between floors.

Compared to ramps, VPLs are a much more space-saving option. For example, by ADA code, a ramp needs to be one foot long for every inch of rise. So, if you have a 24-inch rise, you’d need a 24-foot ramp! That’s a lot of space and often isn’t practical. Even if you don’t need it to be completely ADA compliant in a residential home, it’s really not a good idea to go beyond a one foot for every 1.5” inches of rise (at this ratio a 24” rise is still 16ft of ramp!). A VPL gives you the same access without taking up nearly as much room.

How Does a Platform Lift Work?

A Vertical Platform Lift works by using a platform that moves vertically along a tower or shaft. The user simply rolls onto the platform with their mobility device, such as a wheelchair or scooter, and presses a button to control the lift. As the platform rises, safety ramps or gates fold up to create a secure barrier, ensuring a safe ride. The lift is either powered by batteries or a hydraulic system, and it can be used indoors or outdoors. Some platform lifts even come with enclosures. These are great for staying dry outside, or meeting commercial lift code requirements when the travel is over 5 vertical feet.

How Much Does It Cost To Install a Platform Lift?

The cost to install a platform lift varies depending on several factors, including the height it needs to cover, the type of platform lift (vertical or inclined), and any customizations required. On average, a basic Vertical Platform Lift cost with installation can range from $6,000 (A porch or garage lift) to $27,000 (luxury enclosed tall lifts) for residential homes. For commercial properties the price range is quite wide as there are some very unique platform lifts available that can be quite costly. Additional costs may arise for specific features like enclosures or extended platforms. While this can be a significant investment, it's often more affordable than a residential elevator and much more space-efficient than a long ramp.

What Is a Hydraulic Platform Lift?

A Hydraulic Platform Lift uses a hydraulic drive mechanism to move the platform up and down. This type of lift is known for its smooth and quiet operation, making it a popular choice for residential and commercial applications. Hydraulic lifts require a bit more maintenance than screw-drive lifts but are highly reliable. They are typically installed in homes with higher lifting requirements or where smooth, consistent operation is preferred.

Vertical Platform Lifts vs. Inclined Platform Lifts

Both Vertical Platform Lifts (VPL) and Inclined Platform Lifts (IPL) help people with mobility challenges, but they work differently depending on your home’s layout.

When a VPL Would Be the Best Option:

  • When you need to move vertically between a porch or deck and the ground level.

  • When there isn’t enough space to install a wheelchair ramp.

  • When you’re looking for an outdoor solution that’s safe and easy to use.

When an IPL Would Be the Best Option:

  • When you need to travel up and down an existing staircase.

  • When a VPL isn’t an option due to space constraints.

  • If you want to keep the stairs usable for other people when the lift isn’t in use, as IPLs fold up when not in use.

Who Benefits Most from Platform Lifts?

Vertical Platform Lifts are a fantastic option for anyone who uses a wheelchair, scooter, or other mobility devices. They allow people to maintain independence by easily moving between levels without needing assistance. Families with children in wheelchairs also benefit, as carrying a child and their wheelchair up and down stairs can be dangerous.

VPLs also come in handy for people who may not use a wheelchair but have difficulty with stairs due to age or other conditions. They can carry groceries, packages, and even laundry up and down between floors, saving a lot of physical effort.

A Few Points About Space

Vertical Platform Lift Space Considerations

When considering a VPL, think about where it will be installed. VPLs typically have an “L”-shaped platform that moves up and down. For outdoor installations, they don’t require much space, but the area needs to be big enough for the platform and the mobility device it will carry. If installed indoors, a VPL may need an open shaft or enclosed space, depending on the design. For general applications, you can use a 5’ x 5’ space as an example of roughly how much room is required.

Inclined Platform Lift Sizing Requirements

IPLs are mounted on existing staircases and may require more space along the stairs and at the top and bottom landings. It’s important to accurately measure the staircase width and landing area to make sure the lift can fit and allow easy movement for others when not in use. Most inclined platform lifts require 34” - 38” of stairway width, and plenty of runway at the bottom for the platform to sit all the way on the lower landing with space to exit safely.

Best Practices When Selecting Platform Lifts

Lifting Height

One of the first things to consider is the height the lift needs to cover. Measure the vertical distance between the levels you want the lift to connect. Most VPLs can cover heights up to 14 feet, making them suitable for porches, decks, and even some interior spaces. The National travel height platform lift limit for the USA is 14’. In some states (like Pennsylvania) you need a variance to go above 12’ (still with a maximum of 14’).

Safety Features

Safety is a top priority with platform lifts, so it’s important to look for models that include features like:

  • Non-skid platforms to prevent slips.

  • Safety gates that close when the lift is in motion.

  • Sensor systems that detect obstacles and stop the lift.

  • Emergency stop buttons for added security.

These features ensure that the lift is not only convenient but also safe to use for people of all ages.

FAQs About Vertical Platform Lifts

Can a Vertical Platform Lift be installed outdoors?

Yes! Vertical Platform Lifts can be installed both indoors and outdoors, depending on where you need access. Outdoor VPLs are commonly used to connect ground level with porches or decks.

How much weight can a Vertical Platform Lift hold?

Most VPLs have a weight capacity of around 750 lbs, which is enough to carry both the user and their mobility device.

Are Vertical Platform Lifts safe?

Yes, when installed by a professional, VPLs are very safe. They include features like non-skid platforms, safety gates, and emergency stop buttons to ensure user safety.

How much space do I need for a Vertical Platform Lift?

The space needed for a VPL depends on the size of the platform and the height of the lift. Outdoor models generally need less space than indoor models, which may require a shaft or enclosed area.
